WELCOME TO THE HARRY/DRACO BIG BANG COMMUNITY.

THIS COMMUNITY HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED SPECIFICALLY TO HOST A TRADITIONAL BIG BANG CENTRED ON THE DRACO/HARRY PAIRING.

The primary purpose of this community is to host the HARRY/DRACO BIG BANG 2018.

Did you know that the first Big Bang fest EVER was for the Harry/Draco pairing back in 2005? It's been more than 10 years since then, and the format has taken off, spreading to almost every other fandom, with a multitude of different lengths, genres, and other requirements. Most recently, the Harry Potter fandom celebrated our favourite character with the [livejournal.com profile] harrybang in 2015.

It's been several years since there's been a specific Harry/Draco Big Bang to celebrate Harry and Draco's ever changing and intense relationship, and your mods, Capitu, Grace, & Writ, thought that it was time for that to change. And thus, [livejournal.com profile] harrydracobang was born (@harrydracobang on tumblr), with a goal of encouraging and hosting the creation of long EPIC works of fanfiction (50,000 words minimum) and fabulous art.

The Drarry fandom is made up of all sorts of people who enjoy a variety of genres, tropes, and dynamics. We're all here because we adore this complex and explosive pairing, and exploring the many different ways in which a relationship between Harry and Draco can unfold. Connections have been made, friendships have flourished, and it's all because we have something magical in common: we love reading about Harry and Draco banging. :D

The three of us are super excited about this challenge, and we hope all of you are too! Please consider joining us in 2018 on this magical adventure. <3

THE BIG BANG RULES

Minimum Word Count: The minimum word count for this Big Bang will be 50,000 words. While we understand this word count may be daunting for many people, this community has been designed to accommodate those who wish to write longer works of fiction, so we’ve set the word count at the level of 'traditional' fandom Big Bangs. Due to this longer word count minimum Big Bangs need only a handful of participants to be successful. We hope that those of you who might be toying with the idea of writing a longer piece for the first time will consider joining us.

We will be asking artists to produce artwork which represents a comparable amount of work and commitment and by producing a minimum of two separate pieces to accompany the fic they claim. Although we appreciate how much time goes into them, unfortunately we cannot accept photo manipulations for the purposes of this particular challenge.

Draco/Harry Centric: This is a Draco/Harry Big Bang challenge, which means all submissions must focus on this pairing. While original characters, worlds and Non-Magic AUs are all perfectly acceptable, no crossovers are allowed for this particular challenge.

The only content requirement for this big bang is that the primary pairing must be Harry/Draco, though all side pairings and characters are welcome and encouraged. We just ask that the story, in some key manner, revolves around the Harry/Draco pairing. This can be full-on explicit slash, or lower-rated pre-slash. All genres from the darkest of the dark to the fluffiest fluff are also welcome. Whatever tickles your fancy for your long and plotty fanwork should be fine.

If you are in any doubt at all about whether your fic is 'Harry/Draco-centric' or would like further clarification, please do ask early. Email us at [email protected] and we'll come back to you promptly.

Age restrictions: We will be asking all participants to confirm they are over the age of 18. As we don't wish to fetter the ability of writers or artists to do as they wish with their pieces, we do not want to risk pairing underage artists with writers who want to produce an NC-17 fic or vice versa.

While there are no age restrictions with regards to your fanwork and no content restrictions, if you are signing up as an independent author, please be sure to include potential triggers and warnings such as chan when the time comes to submit your synopsis and draft so the artists are broadly aware of the content/genre. We will provide suitable headers for your anonymous summaries so you can flag these aspects at that stage in the process.

Ratings: Creations may be of any rating from G - NC-17.

Original works only: All creations must be original and complete. Previously posted works or works in progress will not be accepted.

HTML and Beta reading: All fics must be edited. It is your responsibility to have your story read by a beta for consistency, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Hosting: We will be hosting all works on Archive of Our Own. The collection is harrydracobang. If you do not have an AO3 account, please email the mods, and we will send you an invitation.

Posting: The mods will be posting and revealing works on AO3 during the month of September 2018. Submissions will be staggered over a 1-2 week period to allow readers time to make their way through the submissions. Artwork should be embedded in the story on AO3, and artists may also choose to make a separate art-only post of their work on AO3 as well. We ask that fic and art not be posted in its entirety on any other platform until the period of exclusivity ends on October 28, 2018. Artists, if they so choose, may post their artwork onto tumblr before the exclusivity period ends, but only if those art posts also include a link back to the accompanying fic. Both authors and artists may link to their AO3 works or post snippets/teasers on other platforms--in fact, we encourage it!

Support: We will be offering a chat based discussion forum on Discord for all participants seeking encouragement. Both authors and artists will have access to this forum, where they can seek support from other Big Bang participants. All of the writers will be sent invitations to join the Harry Draco Big Bang writers channel when sign ups close, and artists will be sent the details to the Harry Draco Big Bang artists channel when they register. This platform will be used to host events where participants can make a cup of tea and sit and chat with others about challenges, plotting, difficulties and so on.

Extensions: While we will allow time for making minor changes and tweaks, and for tidying up drafts, we will need to receive the final synopsis and substantially complete rough first draft by the relevant check-in dates with no exceptions. We define substantially complete as around 80% of the anticipated word count. Although this draft does not have to be polished, we want to know you're well on your way to completing the story within the timeframe. This is to allow the artists sufficient time to complete their work. We will be more lenient with these deadlines in circumstances where the authors and artists team up from the outset, and where we are sent WIPs which give us some measure of comfort :D

SIGN UP PROCESS

Sign Ups: Sign ups will open for writers on January 1, 2018 and will remain open for all of January. Start the New Year off with a BANG! You may sign up to participate with another author, if you wish to co-write for this challenge. We will be hosting signups on livejournal, or, if you do not have a livejournal account, via google forms. In order to participate in the fest, we do require that you have either a livejournal account or a tumblr account so that you can follow the fest on at least one platform and receive important updates.

Artists Sign Up: Artist sign-ups will open at the same time as writer sign ups, January 1, 2018, with an option to register via livejournal or google forms. Registering as an artist will not commit you to participating, it will just signal your strong interest in participation, so that the mods can ensure that you have access to the writer's summaries once they become available. We do require that artists have created at least one piece of fest-quality work prior to signing up. As with the writers, in order to participate in the fest, we do require that you have either a livejournal account or a tumblr account so that you can follow the fest on at least one platform and receive important updates.

Artists Claiming: To ensure our artists have completed fic to accompany their artwork, we will be making summaries available to all registered artists on June 8, 2018. Artists will then have 48 hours to peruse the summaries, and we will open artist's claiming on June 10, 2018 at 9AM EST | 2PM BST. The one exception to this is if you wish to undertake an Author/Artist collaboration as detailed below. Claiming will be done through google forms in order to ensure anonymity.

Author/Artist collaborations: Authors and artists who would like to collaborate throughout the whole process are invited to sign up together and are encouraged to share ideas along the way. If you intend to do this, please sign up individually and indicate in the "Anything Else" section that you are collaborating/who you are collaborating with.

This is not the typical approach in a Big Bang, but we think it is something that might be fun for participants, so we would like to offer the possibility. The same check-in deadlines and milestones set out below will apply in the case of an author and artist collaboration and all joint sign-ups must be in before the writers deadline closes on January 31, 2018. After that, the sign ups will revert to the usual Big Bang format, with the writers working on their fics over the first half of the year, and artists signing up to create pieces which are inspired by anonymous summaries/first drafts.

HOW ELSE CAN I PLAY & PARTICIPATE IN THIS HARRY/DRACO BANG?

We hope watchers and members will begin marking their calendars off with excitement waiting for posting of the Big Bang fic and art to begin, but even if you cannot commit to creating a novel length fic or accompanying art, there are still plenty of other ways that you can participate and help support the fest! Here's how you can be involved.

Story Banners: When we get nearer to posting we would like to have story banners to help us promote the entries on tumblr. Are you a whizz at this stuff? Let us know if so. We'd love to hear from you and keep you in mind for the final stages of the fest, and all of your work will be credited of course.

Pimp, promote, SQUEE: The idea of spending a months working on a behemoth of a novel-length fic only to have it post to a tiny community with hardly any readers might be a little demoralising, even if people write largely for themselves. We would therefore love to see people who aren't participating but who find the whole thing interesting and like to curl up with plotty fics and beautiful art, to watch and join the community. Please use the pimping banner (see the code above!) and come and hang out, both on livejournal and on tumblr. Bring your friends.

Cheerleaders, alpha readers, beta readers: We would love to have plenty of people cheering our participants on, both when it comes round to reading time and for those who like alpha readers to take a first look at their fics and offer constructive feedback. Finding cheerleaders, alphas, and betas for longer works can be challenging, so we’re sure to have participants that will be in need of some extra support. We will do a separate post as we get nearer that point and request sign-ups.

Proof readers: Every fic that posts as a part of this Big Bang challenge will be proof read. While the mods do plan on taking on the bulk of this work, given the length of fic being produced for this challenge and our other modly responsibilities, it's likely that we may need some help. If you think you may be interested in proof-reading, please let the mods know, and we'll keep you in mind if we need additional support when the time comes.

We hope to see you all in January 2018!
